Binge Eating Disorder (BED), also referred to as ‘compulsive eating disorder’ or mislabelled as ‘emotional eating’, is a prevalent issue characterised by uncontrollable overindulging in food – you might find yourself frequently consuming a great amount of food in one sitting, whether or not you’re actually hungry. Research suggests that Binge Eating Disorder (BED) affects 4-8% of people.
Unlike other forms of eating disorders like anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, there are no purging behaviours involved with BED, leading to an increased likelihood of increasing weight. For this reason, people tend to seek out help because of the distress in their weight or shape. However, without realising their have Binge Eating Disorder, many people seek weight loss treatment from their GP instead of therapy. This typically results in temporary weight loss, but because the eating disorder is left unchecked, the weight loss never lasts and people feel like they failed the diet and their doctor.
If you have had enough of weight cycling (yoyo dieting) and feel that you would benefit from binge eating therapy in Perth, Intuitry can help.
Why do I overeat?
Like all eating disorders, there are many factors that contribute towards the development of Binge Eating Disorder. These include genetic temperament, family views on eating and weight, trauma, and the development of relationship with food.
What triggers a binge eating episode is often even more complex, though typically an accumulation of many things – often work stress, interpersonal difficulties, hunger, boredom, and fatigue.
Anxiety and depression are commonly associated with compulsive overeating; this pattern develops because eating provides a reliable, relatively inexpensive, easily accessible coping for moments of particular difficulty when managing mental health issues. However, it can often lead to further negative consequences in the long term if not addressed.
Binge eating disorder can lead to a harmful cycle of poor emotional health, as sufferers often feel overwhelmed with feelings of guilt, shame and low self-worth. As this behaviour typically occurs in solitude, it is rarely observed by those around them, making it harder to diagnose or be aware of the issue. This is then further compounded by Diet Culture’s perpetuated notion that eating well is just a matter of self-discipline and intelligence. People suffering from binge eating disorder often feeling an increased sense of shame in not being able to measure up to the ideals of discipline they feel that they should be able to.
It’s also worth mentioning that not every case looks identical. For some people, overeating may occur once every few weeks or months, whereas others may struggle with frequent episodes throughout the day or week on a regular basis. For some people, overeating can be at one meal, and for others it’s switching from eating ‘well’ to overeating for several days, before getting back on track.
In any case, it’s important to find healthy coping mechanisms rather than relying on food as a means of managing your emotions and stress levels – with our help, you can begin your journey towards healthier eating patterns and a more fulfilling lifestyle overall.
